At the onset of the activities at White City Community Centre, all 35 children were not able to read and write.

To date, 30 learners are able to read and write with only five still learning to write vowels.

The Matobo District Schools Inspector, Mr Mpofu appreciated the reduction in the number of non-writers.

“I appreciate the reduction in the number of non-writers because it shows progress and contributes towards a high literacy rate,” said Mpofu.

He highlighted that the intervention has served as a measuring guide to monitor progress towards the achievement of education services objectives.

“This project has helped us to check on our Right to Education Index to see if we have reached where we want to be as a district in terms of education,” said Mpofu.

White City Community Learning Centre Mother, Sukoluhle Dube stated that the progress made at the learning center has drawn the attention of the community members.

“The community is now demonstrating more interest because parents frequently visit the center to check on our activities,” said Dube.

The officials went on to request the continuation of the project and the creation of strategies that ensure the sustainability of the intervention.
