The Forum for African Women Educationalists Zimbabwe Chapter (FAWEZI) is a non-governmental organisation established in 1998 and registered as a private voluntary organisation in 1999. FAWEZI is an affiliate of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), a Pan-African Non-Governmental organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. FAWE was founded in 1992 by five African women ministers of education — the late Hon. Vida Yeboa of Ghana, Hon. Simone de Comarmond of Seychelles, Hon. Paulette Missambo of Gabon, Hon. Dr Fay Chung of Zimbabwe, and Hon. Alice Tiendrebéogo of Burkina Faso. It was formalized and launched in September 1992 by a group numbering 19 senior African women policy-makers in education. FAWEZI is a membership organisation, drawing members from female and male educationists, as well as individuals or organisations with an interest in promoting the education of girl children.

Our Mission

FAWEZI provides opportunities for girls and women to develop skills, competencies and values that will make them productive members of the society. This is done in partnership with strategic partners, national government, Non-Governmental Organizations, educators, researchers and local communities to influence policy and practice, build public awareness and demonstrate best educational practice.

Our Vision

An inclusive society in which all gender disparities in education are eliminated and girls and women are holistically empowered for socio-economic transformation.

Our Goal

Empower girls and women through quality education and training to give them necessary skills, competencies and values to be productive members of their societies.

Our community advocacy work targets communities where gender inequalities are common. FAWEZI works towards building public awareness on the social and economic value of girls’ education so that citizens take responsibility for the task and collectively work to support the education agenda.

FAWEZI recognizes the commendable improvement in addressing girls’ education in Zimbabwe, but the work isn’t finished yet. Appropriate education policies are key for effective gender transformation in education systems, therefore FAWEZI works to influence education policy in favor of increasing access, improving retention and enhancing performance of girls in school.

FAWEZI’s Demonstrative Interventions  aim to identify and implement projects that work in the area of educating girls, demonstrating to stakeholders the ideal places for improvement.

In order to identify the best ways to implement change, FAWEZI keeps up to date on research studies involving girls and education. We also conduct our own studies, adding to this important literature.
