Empowering Survivors, Ending Abuse: Knowledge and Referral Key Weapons in Fight Against Gender-Based Violence
In the heart of Shamva District Ward 16, Forgiveness Karima shines. As a dedicated SASA! Together champion, she has witnessed and catalyzed significant changes within her community. Her story depicts the power of knowledge and the importance of effective referral pathways in combatting violence against women and girls.
Forgiveness passionately explains the impact of her work: “Through the SASA! Together sessions, we’ve empowered our community with the knowledge of where and how to report cases of violence. Before, such issues would die a silent death because people didn’t know the right places to take their concerns. Now, our communities are informed and are taking action,” says Forgiveness
Her sessions have not only raised awareness but have also instilled a sense of agency among community members. “People now know where to report cases of violence against women and girls and the steps to follow in our ward,” she says with pride.
The Power of Referral Pathways
The power of these sessions is depicted in a case from her community. A 13-year-old girl was raped, and the community, guided by the referral pathway taught by Forgiveness, acted swiftly.
“We reported the case through the police, and the matter went before the court. The man is now in jail, and the girl is back in school,” Forgiveness recounts. “This is the power of knowing the proper way of reporting such cases.”
Forgiveness’s efforts are transformative she says they have also witnessed more community members opening up during sessions and reports are being made,
“reports of violence against women and girls have increased not because of the rise in incidents but rather a reflection of more people coming forward to report cases,” says Forgiveness
Forgiveness’s story is about real lives being transformed.
She shares, “There was a time when women and girls suffered in silence. Now, they have the courage to speak out and seek help. Our communities now take action. We know the right places to take our issues, and we are taking action.”
Celebrating Success
The SASA! Together sessions, led by Forgiveness, have become a cornerstone of community support. Each session is planned. Forgiveness uses SASA! Together materials, testimonies, and interactive discussions engage participants and ensure they understand the procedures.
She recalls one session where a woman stood up and shared her story. “She told us how she had used the referral pathway to report her abusive husband. The man was called for counselling, and he has changed. Her story inspired many,” Forgiveness says.
Forgiveness is optimistic about the future. She envisions a Shamva District where every woman and girl knows her rights and has access to justice. “We are on the right path, but there is still much work to be done. We need more support, more resources, and continued education,” she emphasizes.
Her dedication is unwavering, and her impact is undeniable. Forgiveness Karima is not just a community champion; she represents resilience, leading the charge towards a safer and more just society for women and girls in Shamva District.
